Can I do a divorce without a lawyer?

The first thing a person usually wants to know is if they can do a divorce without a lawyer.  The answer is YES. In Washington , a lawyer is not required and a person can represent oneself.  In fact, there are mandatory forms provided by the state that help to simplify the divorce process.

An attorney can make the divorce much easier and simple. Think of it this way, would you fix your own car or would you hire a mechanic?  If you got sick, would you go to a doctor or use home remedies?  For a simple oil change or the common cold, self-help is sufficient.  Even the simplest uncontested divorces require knowledge of complex procedures. If you are:

·        uncomfortable with appearing alone in court.

·        do not have the time to fill out the forms.

·        intimidated by procedures (such as serving the other party or time deadlines),

then it is probably both easier and less stressful to let an attorney help you.   A lawyer’s advice may be especially beneficial in cases that are contested or that involve children and property settlements.
